From Miami to Madrid: Joseph and Brighton’s Unexpected Journey with Shakira

A story of friendship, music and an international opportunity that brought two young
members of Masaka Kids Africana into an extraordinary experience with the global artist.

A journey that began with friendship

What started as a simple request from friends became an experience that Joseph and
Brighton will remember for years to come. The two children, who are part of Masaka
Kids Africana, were invited by their friends from Ghetto Kids to travel to Miami for a
series of activities.
Masaka Kids Africana agreed to let the boys accompany their friends without knowing
at first exactly what the trip would involve. Once in Miami, however, they learned that
the activities would bring them into a project involving Shakira.
For Masaka Kids Africana, the decision was guided by friendship, trust and respect.
The organisation also understood that Joseph and Brighton were carrying with them a
much bigger representation: the hopes and potential of children from Uganda.

From Miami to the World Cup

The opportunity continued beyond the initial activities in Miami. Joseph and Brighton
later travelled to take part in activities connected with the World Cup, where they
again spent time with Shakira.
Those shared experiences created a meaningful connection between the artist and
the children. What may have begun as a professional collaboration gradually became
a personal bond built through time spent together.

A discovery after the boys returned home

When Joseph and Brighton returned to Uganda, Shakira wanted to reconnect with
them. Because the children live at Masaka Kids Africana and are part of the
organisation, she reached out through the organisation’s contact number.
That conversation revealed an important part of the story. Shakira learned that the
two children she had met through the music-video and World Cup-related activities
were members of Masaka Kids Africana. Until then, she had not known that
connection.
The discovery added another dimension to an already special relationship, and the
connection between Shakira and the children continued to develop.

The story reaches Madrid
The journey has now continued in Madrid. Joseph and Brighton have been spending
time with Shakira not only through professional and stage-related activities, but also
in moments away from the spotlight.
Shakira invited the Masaka Kids Africana children to accompany her during her stay in
the Spanish capital. During this period, she has also publicly recognised both groups
connected to the story: Ghetto Kids and Masaka Kids Africana.

More than a moment in the spotlight
For Masaka Kids Africana, the significance of this experience goes beyond the visibility
that comes with meeting an internationally recognised artist. It reflects values that
have been important to the organisation from the beginning: friendship, generosity
and respect.
It also demonstrates the power of music and culture to create connections across
borders. A request between friends led to a trip to Miami, an international project,
World Cup experiences and, eventually, an ongoing relationship that brought Joseph,
Brighton and Masaka Kids Africana into the public story in Madrid.
For Joseph and Brighton, the experience is a reminder that opportunities can emerge
in unexpected ways. For Masaka Kids Africana, it is another chapter in a journey
centred on children, their talents, their relationships and the possibilities that open
when their potential is given room to grow.
